The Be Bothered Movement is offering a college scholarship that gives students an opportunity to inspire youth to make healthy life choices by creating an art piece that deters underage youth from alcohol and marijuana use.

Scholarship Details

 

  • Eligibility: Applicants must be a senior in high school or a student in college under the age of 21. Applicants may attend college outside of Sacramento County but must have permanent residency in Sacramento County, California.

​

  • Enrollment Status: Proof of enrollment is required prior to scholarship payment that shows applicant is registered for a minimum of two classes. Proof does not need to accompany the application. 

​

  • Award: There are two $1,000 scholarships available.

 

Timeline

  • Intent to Apply Form Deadline: By 5:00 p.m., April 21, 2022

  • Submission Deadline: April 23, 2022 in person

  • Application Review: April - May 2022

  • Art Showcase: June 23, 2022 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Intent to Apply Form

Applicants MUST submit this form in order to apply for this scholarship. We will use this information to schedule your submission. Submit by 5:00 p.m. on April 21.


Art Showcase

On June 23, 2022 from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., we will be holding an event in Sacramento, California where all submissions will be showcased and recognized. Attendance is mandatory for all scholarship recipients. Along with the art showcase, there will be an educational presentation for all participants to receive information about alcohol and marijuana use prevention for youth. This session will be in person as COVID-19 safety protocols allow.

Submission Day

Applicants must submit their art piece, essay and parental consent form (if applicable) in person on April 23, 2022. We will contact applicants to schedule a submission time.

 

Art Piece Details

Applicants will be able to submit one original art piece of their choice from the list below that fulfills the prompt:

Create one art piece that exemplifies the impact of alcohol and/or marijuana on youth AND what is possible when youth do not use alcohol and marijuana.

  • Physical Art (painting, drawing, sculpture, or photography)

    • The original piece plus a photo/scan of the piece must be submitted.

  • Performance Art (video of a rap, song, story, poem, skit or interview)

    • Must be submitted as a 2-5 minute-long video AND in written form (such as a script). Videos must be submitted via usb flash drive in MP4 format.

 

Informative Essay Details

Applicants must also submit one essay (500-1,000 words) that addresses all four of the following points:

  1. What bothers you about underage alcohol and/or marijuana use?

  2. How does underage alcohol and/or marijuana use affect your community and environment in Sacramento County?

  3. In what ways does your art piece represent underage alcohol and/or marijuana use prevention?

  4. You must demonstrate your understanding for why preventing youth alcohol and/or marijuana is important. We have provided some educational materials (included in the additional documents section) but encourage you to seek out credible sources and do your own research.

 

Note: No specific essay or citation format is asked for or will be used to review submitted essays. If applicant decides to provide facts from a credible source of their finding, please include source information as a footnote.

 

Submission Guidelines

  • All work must be original. This includes not using recording samples from other artists.

  • No profanity, sexual or violent language in any art piece submission.

  • No use of alcohol, marijuana, or other drugs in any art piece submission.

  • If music is being used, only music that is created by applicant can be used.

  • Anyone who is featured in a video or audio recording must sign a waiver.

FAQs and Definitions

  • How many awards are there?

    • Two $1,000 scholarships, both available to high school seniors and college students 20 years old or younger.

​

  • Can I still apply if I attend school outside of Sacramento County, California?

    • Yes, as long as your permanent residence is in Sacramento County.

​

  • How do I submit my intent to apply form?

    • Click on the link to the form, fill out the required fields, and click "done." We will then contact you to schedule a submission time on March 28, 2022.

  • What if I change my mind and don't want to apply for the scholarship after submitting the intent to apply form?

    • We understand! Sometimes things change. Just let us know when we contact you to schedule a submission time, or contact us after scheduling a submission time to cancel.​

​

  • What if I don't have proof of enrollment at this time?

    • Proof of enrollment is not required to apply for the scholarship. However, if awarded, payment will not be issued until proof of enrollment is provided.​

​​

  • When will I receive my award?

    • Scholarship awards will be given to recipients after proof of enrollment that shows registration for a minimum of two classes has been received.
