The Be Bothered Movement is offering a college scholarship that gives students an opportunity to inspire youth to make healthy life choices by creating an art piece that prevents underage alcohol and marijuana use.

Scholarship Details

 

  • Eligibility: You must be a senior in high school or a student in college under the age 21 who permanently resides in Sacramento County to be able to apply.

​

  • Enrollment Status: Proof of enrollment is required that shows applicant is registered for a minimum of two classes.

​

  • Award: There are two $1,000 scholarships available.

Submission Day and Educational Prevention Workshop

All applicants must submit their art piece in person on Saturday March 7, 2020 from 10-11:30 AM. Applicants will also turn-in their essay, waiver (if applicable), and art piece. Included in this submission day is an hour-long workshop (food provided) in which applicants will receive information on the various truths and myths of underage alcohol and marijuana use.

Art Showcase

On Thursday, May 21, 2020 from 6:30 to 8 PM, we will be holding a space for all submissions to be showcased and appreciated. Attendance is mandatory for all scholarship recipients. Along with the art showcase, there will be an educational presentation for all participants to receive information about alcohol and marijuana use prevention for youth.

Art Piece Details

Applicants will be able to submit one original art piece of their choice from the list below that fulfills the prompt:

Create one art piece that exemplifies what a healthy community looks like when youth are not affected by alcohol and/or marijuana.

 

  1. Spoken Word (rap, song, or poem)

    • Must be submitted as a 2-3-minute-long audio recording and in written form.

  2. Physical Art (painting, drawing, sculpture, or photography)

    • Must be submitted with title.

  3. Public Service Announcement

    • Must be submitted as a 2-3-minute-long video.

 

Essay Details

Applicants must also submit one essay (500-1,000 words) that addresses all four of the following points:

  1. What bothers you about underage alcohol and/or marijuana use?

  2. How does underage alcohol and/or marijuana use affect your community and environment in Sacramento County?

  3. In what ways does your art piece represent underage alcohol and/or marijuana use prevention?

  4. You must include at least one fact-based statement from the educational material (included in the additional documents section or from a credible source of your own finding) about alcohol and/or marijuana that demonstrates your understanding for why prevention is important for youth.

 

Note: No specific essay or citation format is asked for or will be used to review submitted essays. If applicant decides to provide facts from a credible source of their finding, please include source information as a footnote.

 

Submission Guidelines

  • All work must be original.

  • No profanity or sexual and violent language in any art piece submission.

  • No use of alcohol, marijuana, or other drugs in any art piece submission.

  • If music is being used, only music that is created by applicant can be used.

  • Anyone who is featured in a video or audio recording must sign a waiver.

How many awards are there?

Two $1,000 scholarships, both available to high school seniors and college students 20 years old or younger.
Can I still apply if I attend school outside of Sacramento County?

Yes, as long as your permanent residence is in Sacramento County.

What does it mean to submit my application form via email?

Please scan or take a picture of your application form and add it as an attachment in an email to bebothered@connectccp.org.

What if I can't submit my application form via email?

If you are unable to submit your application form via email, please contact us at bebothered@connectccp.org.

Is there any way I can miss the submission day and still be eligible for the scholarship?

No. All applicants are required to submit their art piece and paperwork in person so that we have the necessary materials to begin the selection process. On this day applicants will also receive a mandatory hour long workshop on facts and myths of underage alcohol and marijuana use, which cannot be made up.

When will I receive my award?

Scholarship award will be given to recipients after proof of enrollment that shows registration for a minimum of two classes has been received.
